Btw, spot on on the 'low expectations, low disappointment' theory.
I think essay writing competitions besides having to be really good... to a certain point, you have to have luck... luck that your writing style is to the liking of the judges. Umm... at least thats what I think lar... hehe.
You know you got a bunch of readers who doesn't even bother to know about the winner! Am I right??? hehe

'formerly of ssg' was my Music Theory classmate. Now isn't the world a small place? (Interestingly, her sister's name is Su Ann too; when I first saw your name on the shortlist, I wondered if there was any connection)
And yes, I was a debater and we did win the State Title. But I've never taken part in many debates, such as HELP, Taylor's etc. And I've never tried the ESUM. I guess there are some things we'll never know.
By the way, I took part in the IMPAC; didn't get shortlisted then. Here's a long-belated congrats to you!
now now, don't give up and try again. who knows, maybe u will be the next Andrew =P
