xps's are mean looking machines......i like. almost bought one, but cost control there raised a red flag.

i just came back from chiangmai....wonderful place. went there alone to get away from everything...ahhhaaha....

Got the Dell XPS M1530. The Dell M1330 may be a bit small to watch movies all the time on. However, it's good if you plan to be very mobile. Anyways, the features are good. It's a good laptop for a cheap price.

Oh ya, wondering how long will it take to get tourist visa to NY? Coz I'm going to NY, Paris and Japan this dec, and the travel agency told me to apply the visas from the embassies itself and I'm currently in sg, that means I have to go to those 3 different embassies just to get them -_-

hehe ... my gf just oddered the same dell. The good thing about the dell is that u dun have to on the laptop to view pictures, or listen to music or watch movie. There's a button for a really quick startup in less than 5 seconds to do that. And it's cheap too. With free upgrades to 3 or 4 gig ram. Worth it. But beware of the warranty. 330 for a year of extension. And dell always spoil at the end or right after the warranty. Not as realible as HP or sony. Good luck in US!

PS: How come the US n UK visa place has such a dodgy entrance but when u enter in .... it's completely different? haha!

Su Ann, they didn't reissue the expired cheques for you? OMG~ Mmm.. I am sometimes like you too... keeping a cheque under some piles of documents and completely forgetting about it... until the personnel had to call me and inquire if I have banked in the chq coz it showed in their records that I haven't and it's going to expire soon. I think normal cheques once dated, can only be honoured until the next 6 months. For some organisation, it might be a tad troublesome to reissue chq if it means having to go thru some stringent procedure and a whole load of people for verification before the director or authorised person can sign the new chq... so I can actually understand her frustration :P

i was looking around for a new laptop not too long ago and considered getting the xps 1330, but opted for the hp pavilion dv3029tx. it's the same size and similar specs and in my opinion, more aesthetically pleasing. you can check it out if you've got the time.

I personally don't recommend you buying the DELL XPS M1330. I myself use a DELL XPS M1210 while my younger sister has a DELL XPS M1330. I'm not sure about the other series of DELL laptops but both my sister and my laptops have overheating problems and mine got sent back to the DELL factory several times for various repairs. Also, since DELL XPS laptops' casing is made of aluminium alloy, I had several incidents of getting electric jolts from my laptop when I rest my laptop on my lap. Very not fun.

DELL customer service in Malaysia is undeniably the best but the service in US is among the worst. I remember the last time I called DELL in US, I got routed to an Indian dude speaking heavily accented English and couldn't understand me properly. Also, if you were to purchase the laptop in Malaysia, the local warranty doesn't cover for overseas repair.

I would suggest that you look at Apple instead.

i'm using xps m1210 and no probs so far la. the thing about these small laptops is that it is hot but not that hot until you cant rest your hands on the palmrest. if you get the 15" or bigger, should be cooling. and check the US warranty etc. if you have friends in dell, can get the laptop at a very cheap staff price.

I've been using dell all my life, have bought 3 laptops, 2 desktops from dell and 1 widescreen 22" lcd from them so far for myself and family. Like WunMin mentioned earlier, Dell has the best customer service in Malaysia amongst other similar companies.

The Dell 9300 laptop I've been using is about 3 years old, still working fine, except for an issue on LCDs for machines shipped around my purchase time where vertical lines appear after a year or so. Though my warranty expired, Dell acknowledged it was their fault shipping systems with faulty LCDs (produced by some other company) and when I called them they sent a technician over to my place to get the lcd replaced FOC and in under an hour.

I haven't had any overheating problems with my Dell... unless of course you rest your laptop on your bed which will obviously prevent hot air from dissipating via the bottom of your laptop.

The Dell xps m1330 is damn sexy. I've been contemplating getting either that, or the xps m1530 (which has better specs, albeit heavier and slightly more bulky) as a replacement for my 3 year old inspiron. One thing I can advice you, is that you should definitely buy your system in the States. Dell US has much better rebates/discount vouchers and if you look around online for them, you can get like up to 750usd discount on some systems. I have no fracking idea why Dells in Malaysia are more expensive, considering they are all made in Malaysia.. I bought my laptop from the States and it came inside a box that said 'Made in Malaysia'...

So yeah, look out for great deals online from Dell. Make sure you get the 3 year full warranty as well, as usually that is when most laptops start to malfunction or need repairs. No point getting 1 year or 2 year warranty, as the problems usually dont surface till after 1.5-2 years.

Get a 9cell battery as well if you are going to travel around alot.. it adds abit to the weight but it's well worth it..

If you do end up buying your laptop in Malaysia, you can always request for transfer of ownership to the States, and if I'm not mistaken the warranty transfers over as well. Also one reason why you want to buy your laptop in the States is that the power/voltage etc and sockets over there are different, so save you some trouble.


but yeah, dell laptops do jolt you if you rest them on your bare lap, not sure about the new xps 1330 though, but that can be easily solved by just taping the screws/contact points that cause the jolts with some tape/rubber/pads

other great laptops are lenovo/ibm , toshiba.

Dell is fine, but HP is better. If you were to open a Dell computer, you would find low grade quality hardware used compared to other brands such as HP and Sony. Yes, it would still work fine, but a lot of problems will occur. True, their customer service might be one of the best but that is only to compensate the frequent problems caused by the low grade quality.
It's just like (no offense) a Proton and a Honda.

If you are a frequent traveller, Sony or Fujitsu might be the best option. A lil more costly, but its because its so mobile.

I'm so happy you're finally coming to America.................but so sad that you're going to be on the exact opposite end of the country. Tell me if you ever get a chance to come to LA.

As for the laptop, I like my Sony better than my bro likes his Dell laptop. However Dell's tech support is way better than Sony's. With Sony, I always wait for hours and have to call some stupid long-distance number. They're probably not too different in reliability is my guess.

1) its cheaper right here
2) the power chord head here is different from Malaysia

1. spank u! blogging at 5.13 am! u are destined to come to NY. then u should be fine as u are already living the eastern time zone.

2. hey, the acc lady is a bully. the Star has to honor the contract with u. this means her job is to issue u new cheques no matter how tedious.(it is her employment contract with the Star to function) u must be paid as u did not break a contract, u just lapsed some cheques which is not uncommon. ur hard earned rewards!! .l..here in USA lawsuits possibly will follow esp this is a big company....many lawyers will be happy to act for u. go talk to higher officers/managers to resolve.

Dell XPS M1330 one of the sexier models around. But make sure you get 3 years warranty to go with it. The 9 cell battery is heavy like a sack of potatoes but goes on and on and on and on. The only thing is whether they provide the same kind of excellent service over in the US.

Sigh... I can relate with your bad experience with the accounting lady, though mine not similar case or place. I think it's just a Malaysian attitude. I bet if you're a 40+ woman she won't even dare to say anything. The reason she dare to nag (bully) you is coz you're young. :(

an SSD is a Solid-state drive. Regular hard drives have rotating metal discs. SSDs have no moving parts in them.

SSDs are faster and more energy-efficient. regular hard drives currently are way, way cheaper and they offer much bigger capacities.

Try the Dell Studio line.. Really nice laptop with better-than-average features. It's a model that sits between the XPS and Inspiron line so you get the best of both. If u do intend to get the XPS, just be aware that the palm rest tend to get hot sometimes because it's made of metal (or aluminium).

Just my 2 cents worth since I work with lotsa Dell machines.

su ann, i think you can just call dell customer support and have your warranty transferred over. They have some regulations/restrictions/t&c on the transfers but should be no problem going from MY->USA or vice versa, at least i had no problems. just make sure you get the same warranty/years transferred over.

the reason why it is cheaper in the States is because of the great deals/offers you can get for laptops over there. Minus that, the price is about the same (maybe more expensive because of the tax there). Dell Malaysia has some crappy deals like rm100 off or free laptop bag etc, while Dell US has discounts like usd 500 off, but not all the time though. End of year is near, so should start keeping your eye out for discounts and coupons.

Aiyo, buy the laptop herelah. How much cheaper can you get in US? You can have all the softwares, games and whatever junk loaded and use it on the flight mah. As for the model and brand, you won't go wrong with any of these market leader - HP, Dell, Sony or Fujitsu. Who knows your taste more than youself, su ann?

better to get a laptop in US, if anything goes wrong, you still hv warranty to begin with. remember to learn some home recipe, that is more important than doing last minute shopping. if you ask international student what they missed the most, their answer must be food or partner or.............family?. you cant buy home cooking anywhere else but home.
